Public holidays in Honduras 2026 and 2027

The holiday list almost everyone cites is the one in Article 339 of the Código del Trabajo, and on its own it is no longer correct. It is 1959 text. Two later decrees changed it: the three October holidays were merged into the Semana Morazánica, and some holidays move to the following Monday.

Semana Morazánica 2026: Wednesday 7 to Saturday 10 October. The public sector takes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in full. The private sector takes it from Wednesday at 12:00 noon until Saturday at 12:00 noon.

The paid public holidays

These are the days your employer is required to pay, even when they fall on a Sunday. The third column shows whether the holiday is taken on its own date or moves.

These dates are derived from the rules in force, not from an announcement already published: the Semana Morazánica starts on the first Wednesday of October, and Semana Santa depends on Easter Sunday, which in 2027 falls on 28 March. COHEP usually confirms each holiday a few weeks beforehand.

What the Semana Morazánica is, and why you will not find October in the Código

Article 339 still lists 3, 12 and 21 October as separate holidays: the birth of Francisco Morazán, Día de la Raza and Armed Forces Day. Decreto 75-2014 merged them and moved them, for tourism reasons, to the last week of October.

A year later Congress corrected it. Decreto 78-2015 reasoned that late October is still hurricane season, which stopped the holiday serving its tourism purpose, and moved the block to the first Wednesday of October under the name Semana Morazánica. That is the decree in force today:

  • Public-sector employees: the holiday applies from the first Wednesday of October.
  • Private-sector employees: from Wednesday at twelve noon until Saturday at twelve noon.

During 2020 and 2021 several decrees moved the Semana Morazánica to November and December because of the pandemic. Those decrees were for a specific year and no longer apply: the rule in force is once again the one in Decreto 78-2015.

Which holidays move to Monday

Decreto 50-2003 moves national holidays falling on a working day to the following Monday, in order to create long weekends and encourage domestic tourism. The rule has express exceptions, and they are most of the holidays:

  • Taken on their own date, no move: 1 January, the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of Semana Santa, 1 May, 15 September and 25 December.
  • Moves: 14 April, Día de las Américas. In 2026 it fell on a Tuesday and was taken on Monday 20 April.
The move changes the day of rest, not the commemoration. The official date of Día de las Américas is still 14 April; what moves is the paid day off.

How a holiday is paid

If you do not work the holiday, Article 339 requires it to be paid at the daily average of the ordinary and overtime wages you earned during the week immediately before the holiday. If you did not work that week, the wage for a normal working day is used as the basis.

If your wage is set fortnightly or monthly, holiday pay is already included implicitly: the same article says so expressly.

If you work the holiday by agreement with your employer, Article 340 requires it to be paid at a premium. And if two holidays fall on the same day, Article 339 clarifies that the obligation is met by paying a single day.

A worked holiday also affects your severance, because the wage average is the basis of calculation. You can estimate it with the severance calculator or read employment benefits and dismissal.

This is general information, not legal advice for your particular case. If your employer does not pay you the holiday you are owed, you can report it to the Secretaría de Trabajo y Seguridad Social.
